Freelance writing is quickly becoming a new way of income for the unemployed. Nowadays, there are companies, blogs, and numerous publications where you can express yourself for money. There are even sites that will pay you for each submission. This may sound a bit odd because there is no buying or selling involved, but believe, your knowledge is key, on the internet. With that information in mind, one may ask, where do I start?
First, think of a niche. A niche is an area of expertise that you can talk about with passion. Everyone has something to offer the world. Your area of expertise can be anything. The most important part of a niche is finding the part of it that will enthrall readers, or compel them to trust you. In addition, the readers of your articles may return and use your information continuously, therefore making you seem trustworthy enough to sell niche products. For example, the chosen niche may be beauty. There are many different facets of beauty. Some subcategories of beauty may be: Ancient beauty products, new age beauty trends, and 10 easy aromatherapy techniques. In an outline, it would look like this:
Beauty
· Ancient beauty products
· New age beauty trends
· 10 easy aromatherapy techniques
The three bulleted subjects are your first three articles. Now that you have taken the time to outline, go even further into those three articles. Why? Those three articles can turn into 15, right before your eyes. Take “Ancient beauty products “, this article can be broken down further:
Ancient beauty products
· Where was the first makeup produced?
· What was the ancient perception of beauty?
· Who wore the first perfumes?
· How much has perfume changed?
· What types of hairstyles were popular in ancient times?
It is important to outline your niche, for organization purposes, because many possible articles can come from having a clear idea. Now that you have explored your area of expertise, you can begin writing. When starting articles, research is inevitable. Actually, that is part of becoming a writer, first being a student. There are constant sources of information at your disposal, starting with the computer.
Some other great sources of information are your local library, old newspapers, and elderly people. The library is free and the information is priceless. Most libraries have old newspapers preserved on microfiche, making it easier to access information. Old newspapers are always a good source of info because it gives a localized view of world events, which can sometimes work in your favor; especially, if you are aspiring to write about a certain city. Elderly people have become the “new world encyclopedia” because they can correct history’s shortcomings and tell the inside story. You may even find an expert in your niche to use in an expose.
